Music

Intent

At Avenue Primary Academy, our intention is that all children experience a holistic and engaging music curriculum. We would expect them to gain skills through listening, performing, composing and appraising, including making improvements to their own work. The knowledge which is to be achieved in music includes: learning how to use their voices expressively, playing tuned/un-tuned instruments, rehearse and perform with others, create musical patterns through choosing, exploring and organising musical sounds and ideas. Children should also explore and express feelings and ideas about music using cross-curricular links and how to make improvements to their compositions.

Implementation

We aim to provide a wide-ranging musical education which combines developing an understanding of different musical styles and genres with practical music making.  We recognise that music encourages children’s co-operation, creativity and self-esteem so we create exciting, educational and inspirational music opportunities.

Music is planned using the National Model Music Curriculum. In line with the new National Plan for Music Education 2022, music is taught for one hour a week, through singing assemblies and lessons. In addition, children have the opportunity to learn the recorder and glockenspiel, sing in a choir and take individual or group music lessons with peripatetic music teachers. Years 4 and 5 also learn to play the Ukulele. There are also opportunities for music coverage within the topic-based curriculum. Each half term there is a focus on a particular music skill, which is delivered through Charanga. The objectives and skills created through this program cover all the National Curriculum objectives, appropriate for each year group. Every year group will have opportunities to listen and appraise, develop musical skills in singing, playing instruments, improvising and composing, and performing and sharing with an audience.

Impact

As a result of our music curriculum, all pupils across the school develop an interest and a passion for music. They develop a deeper understanding and awareness of music from different cultures and genres. They build upon the understanding of the impact music can have on different individuals, themselves included. All pupils develop a range of knowledge and skills which they can embed into their own lives as they progress throughout the school. By engaging in our music curriculum, children develop their confidence, self-expression, creativity and communication skills.

The curriculum overview shows the learning that will take place in music in each year group. The roadmaps show the progression of skills in music as children move through the school.
